Ferroptosis is a recently discovered form of cell death involving iron, oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Much interest in ferroptosis is evolving due to the potential of ferroptosis to kill highly resistant cancer stem cells. The NORI protocol includes elements necessary to induce ferroptosis. Sodium selenite is a dual inducer of both apoptosis and ferroptosis. High dietary PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) are necessary for induction of ferroptosis. Sufficient free intracellular iron is also necessary. The most important element for ferroptosis induction is depletion of glutathione through dietary cysteine restriction and high dose vitamin B6 (P5P).
